You should think of a myspace account as a funny tshirt slogan, and myspace as a pub, and the other people on it as coils of wire, pulsing slightly as they whisper the names of the dead.

You should think of a facebook account as your face, and facebook as a huge mincing machine, and the other people on it as a huge dead mass exerting their gravitional pull on you from just behind the mincing blades.

You should think of a twitter as a little plate with some kitchen roll spread out on it and dampened and each twitter account as a single spire of cress slowly rising out of it and each comment on it as some kind of cancerous growth on your stalk and your twitter feed is where your growths and some of your neighbours growths intertwine and draw you nearer even though the last thing you ever wanted to do was be near them or anyone else anywhere in the world, and especially not on this plate, on this window ledge by the back door.

I've never played any of the Ultima games, but this sort of thing always makes me laugh a great deal

I used to own the ultima collection! I played 7 and 8 each up to the point where some bug rendered them impossible, as is seemingly the way of Ultima

I quite liked them though, due to hilariously overcomplicated inventory micromanagement

I bought the Ultima Collection from Game in Winchester, and for the first and only time in my life I tried to get it cheaper than it should have been, by swapping the "reduced" label with a cheaper game, in a vague and idiotic understanding of how shops work

which is, ironically, not quite long enough to complete all of the games in the Ultima collection

i'm in a lot of retro groups and people rave about the older ultima games. The original, which came out on the apple ii before the c64, looks amazing. You have to read most of the story and dialogue in the manual as you play because the game didn't have room for it all.

also the idea of creating your entire party from scratch, just to have them all wiped out, is proper roguelike by today's standards. Which is why vom likes them i bet.

i have ultima 4 on gog, and i tried 7 once or twice, but they are quite intimidating

They ought to rename the series How To Assassinate Lord British

I can't remember how much of the earlier ones I played, I think I did find the first few too archaic and strange but I think I spent some time with 5 and 6... 7 was the one I really got into though

I do quite like games where 90% of it seems to just be collecting vast arrays of items and putting them in and taking them out of bags

my roguelike fixation took hold thanks to this game: http://www.roguetemple.com/reviews/ragnarok/

but I'm not sure if that was before or after I played ultimas

"Lord British" has always struck me as a really crap and unimaginative name for a fantasy king. Alright, so the games are set in "Britannia", but still.

It is odd, isn't it. I never heard of anyone who played one and yet enough people must have done to enable Richard Garriott to fly to the fucking international space station

I read that earlier. I thought it was great, especially that he had life-threatening surgery just so he could live out his dream of going into space

I hope me eventually paying the correct price for the Ultima collection allowed him to do that
