Richard Snary and other words
Here is a new words thing I did (I didn't want to hijack Unicorn's thread):
https://public.oed.com/blog/the-revision-of-witch/
It is about the entry for WITCH n., which you should be able to read in full (maybe not forever, but certainly for the time being), but I also didn't want to hijack David's witch thread. The note at sense 1a is the longest note I've managed to get away with so far.

Can't believe I've been saying wicca wrong all my life

Re: Richard Snary and other words
I think everyone's been saying it wrong. I'm mildly interested to see whether anyone complains about the presentation of Wicca as a modern phenomenon distinct from earlier witchcraft, but hopefully they won't.
There's a fair amount of stuff in this update that I worked on, including 'Asian', 'Eurasian' (I had no idea that T. H. Huxley coined 'Eurasia' to describe the landmass, and I don't think anyone else did either), plus 'voodoo', 'hoodoo' and 'zombie', on which more anon hopefully.

My man-witch!
Re: Richard Snary and other words
This be a most fascinatin' article, Bruce! Hurrah!
But the final Witchcraft act, making it illegal to accuse someone of being a witch, was a grave mistake, in my view!

Re: Richard Snary and other words
Didn't Marvel own the copyright on the word 'zombie', at some point? Until they lost a court case or summat.

Re: Richard Snary and other words
Here is the annual Bruce article for 2022, this time on CABINET.
I also meant to write about CHANCELLOR, which was a lot of fun to work on, but I ran out of spacetime.

Re: Richard Snary and other words
Now it is time for this: the contribution of comic strips to the lexicon
Really, where else are you going to go to get a quote for 'blockhead'?
Also features bonus mention of the terrifying Buster Brown, who was discussed in great detail back in the day as I recall

One more for the road: the history of GROOM
I might take a bit of a break after this one, just because three articles in three updates is a bit much, and the deadline has the unfortunate habit of lining up exactly with other deadlines.
