I watched Mean Girls a couple of nights ago, and as teen comedies go, it's rather damn good.
I am easily pleased.

I saw The Big Sleep at the cinema last Sunday afternoon - it was very odd to go from the usual modern day adverts and trailers and things and then be confronted with "A WARNER BROS FIRST NATIONAL PICTURE" with a big 40s orchestra booming away, in black and white, in 4x3 as well. But the film itself was very good and surprisingly funny, but not down to earth as such [/limmy]

Ah excellent! I like that screenings of older films tend to be advert-free. One of my local cinemas is doing a day of four Godzilla films in a couple of weeks and I'm hoping I can make it for the two I haven't seen

I saw seven samurai at the cinema last year and it was incredible, even if it did start at 10 in the morning, which seems way to early to watch a film really

I also watched the Mean Grills musical remake flick, which was an error, as I don't like musicals. Durrr!

Yeah, there were actually only two adverts at this Big Sleep screening, and then it was straight into the trailers - and those were for things I might potentially watch, like that new one with Pamela Anderson in the midst of the deepest melancholy. It was a relief as some of the adverts you get now, and that I've seen in front of other films, are fucking shocking (on multiple levels), and the two that were shown were easily the least objectionable I've seen for a while.
Actually the cinema is now the only place I see adverts, and it just reminds me why I only watch Youtube, blu-rays and random downloads of VHS tapes. At the Brass Eye outtake doc screening I mentioned a while back, instead of adverts or trailers we got an introductionary experimental collage that concluded with a pre-recorded announcement by Matt Berry. And the pre-show music included both
this and
this.

When my kids were smaller we'd sometimes go to 'parent and baby' screenings of films, and they were always on at 10 or 11am. It felt incredibly luxurious to go and watch a film in the morning with a little cup of coffee or something, I loved it.

When I'm retired I'm going to spend so many daylight hours in the cinema.

I've always enjoyed a morning cinema trip because then the afternoon is still free for me to completely waste it and then feel bad about it

The best thing to do would be to also spend the afternoon in the cinema.

I just noticed Letterboxd now do that thing that Spotify do, where they generate a round up of "your year in cinema". 36 hours watched of fillums, apparently. And then I scrolled down and saw this:

that's very good value! I bought a membership for my local cinema and the main thing that offers is £5 tickets on Mondays so I will be attempting to go to the cinema on as many Mondays as possible. so far I've seen A Complete Unknown and The Brutalist, plus I used one of the two free tickets to see Nosferatu.

Mine isn't technically actually a cinema, its an art gallery. but they have some sort of arrangment with curzon so they show all their films after they've ended regular screenings, so a couple of months late, and only once or twice (i think nosferaturu's on next week or maybe the week after, so i might go and see it)
weirdly, there's an actual curzon directly opposite, and even though they've got five screens, and hsow things earlier, they seem to show barely anything at all (certianly next to none of the more obscure foriegn films, at least). i don't know why. when i was a member there i got six free films for a year, but also you did get to see some of the netflix/amazon films for free, that get super restricted cinema releases just so they're eligible for baftas, but which they don't want anyone to actually go and watch because they want you to subscibe to amazon.netflix instead

so in conclusion, i don't understand how the art gallery makes any money out of this, or curzon for that matter, but at least i get to see loads of films now, for not that much money, in an almost entirely empty room, because i seem to be one of about five people in the whole of mid to north essex who ever goes there

also they've got loads of those japanese film festival films on starting next week, which was the main reason i joined last year and even if that was all you got free tickets for would be worth most of the £100 fee anyway

On Friday morning I saw Who Framed Roger Rabbit. I had seen it many times before but this was the first time I had seen it in an actual cinema since the very first time I watched it. That was back in 1988 or whenever, when it was released, at my demolished local cinema, that is now flats and a car park
Anyway, it turned out it was a "relaxed" screening for the benefit of autistic people, and brilliantly they went straight into the movie without any adverts or trailers or anything at all. They didn't even bother showing the BBFC certificate, it was simply right into the opening credits.
I was very happy not to suffer through that one ad with a load of people on a train looking at their phones, who then all look up as one and chant the phrase "IT IS WHAT IT IS", like a modern form of a Chris Morris style parody of something or other

In addition to the film noir above, I am going to go to the Prince Charles Cinema in London later this week, to see Eraserhead. Seeing as the Prince Charles is under threat of closure it seemed like a vital thing to do in case the worst happens to them. (Financially they're doing fine, but they have a new twatty landlord who wants to demolish it and replace it with a hotel or something -
here's a petition you can sign)

nosferatu (the new nosferatu) - i quite enjoyed this, but ralph ineson (as some sort of doctor) and aaron taylor johnson (as some sort of boring rich man) give quite possibly the very worst performances of all time in the fairly brief but also fairly major bits they're in

Ralph 'Salvage Hunters narrator' Ineson, is how I know him best. I hope his flim dialogue featured lines like: "Today Drew Pritchard is travelling to a glove factory in Yeovil, as he attempts to find rare unique vintage items that will spark the interest and meet the needs of his wealthy clients."

The last two flims I watched were Easy A and She's The Man - both enjoyable 90 minute-y teen romcoms. I think an intervention might be required.

I saw "Kiss Me Deadly" at my local Picturehouse. The ending is absolutely deranged and amazing, and it's remarkable how for years (until 1997) that ending was heavily cut down and re-edited for some reason (possibly really odd censorship, but also possibly not that)
