As I said last year:
---
I listened to a podcast about The Goonies.
After listening to a podcast about The Goonies, I realised that I've only ever watched the first half or so of The Goonies.
---
This bothered me more than it should've done.

Today I went to the BFI Southbank, to view some old programmes in their Mediateque section. (Sorry, can't spell "mediateque".) You don't need to book in advance for the regular stuff, but I think for certain "deep cuts" you have to make arrangements in advance or something. Anyway, I watched the surviving footage of "A Show Called Fred", which was good fun even though it was two episodes wonkily edited together.
After that I saw the first episode of Countdown in full, or at least skipped through the bits that looked the most interesting. Carol Vorderman appears for about two seconds at the start, and everyone looks very nervous. Ted Moult is who they had in 1982 instead of Suzie Dent.
And then! I watched an episode of Murun Buchstansangur, because I had looked it up in the BFI library computers beforehand and it told me they had some available for show. The weird thing about it is that this episode (and a couple of other different programmes I briefly looked at) had a full chunk of adverts and continuity beforehand and after, and it didn't seem to be sourced from VHS. The episode I saw was one already on Youtube, but shown on a different date, and had the continuity announcement to The Last Resort afterwards.
Oh, and there was a typically shit-looking trailer for Network 7. "TELEVISION, BUT MORE SO". To make the really quite lovely animated trailer bumper (
this one, at about seven minutes in) look more "street" (Porter), they'd mucked about with it using very crude video effects, and coloured it all a grisly shade of pukey green. I genuinely thought the digital transfer had gone wrong at that point until I realised what was happening.

Yes, BFI Southbank is now the thing that occupies where the Museum Of The Moving Image used to be. It's sad, but you do now at least have the aforementioned Mediateque (still can't spell it), and they've expanded the cinemas that were on site to four screens now. Also you get regular announcements in the building when a film is about to start that sound like cheery train station announcements. I got confused when I heard the first one (through my headphones, as Peter Sellers was pretending to be the Rank gong man) and thought they were informing us that the 15:25 to Guildford had been delayed.
But yeah, MOMI was fantastic. I went a few times in the 90s - actually I think the very first time I went, it was the late 80s (1988, I think?), and it had just opened. Weirdly enough recently I found the full souvenir brochure from that first visit - I'm going to have to scan it, assuming someone hasn't already done that.
Once I went to MOMI with the whole family, and they had a half a Dalek on display. It was only half a Dalek because the back had been removed, and visitors were invited to sort of crouch into it and "operate" it (i.e. waggle about the gunstick and yell into a microphone that went into a ring modulator). My little sister, who was very young at the time, went into it and shouted into the mic: "I am a Dalek! You gimme... gorgonzola!!!". Everyone laughed at the cuteness.
As it happens, that Dalek prop was one of the ones that went missing, and they spent ages trying to track it down again. Actually I can't remember if they ever found it or not.
The Southbank venue also has a shop, and they had loads of rare compilations on DVD of experimental short films. I bought a couple, despite the eye-watering expense - guess it's Pot Noodles for a couple of weeks for me now. And I got a book of interviews with Hanna-Barbera (as in the two men who the company was named after). There were also boxsets of Children's Film Foundation films, but I'd spent enough already.

i watched the godfather films this week, because they'e on th eiplayer. for some reason, the third one is a new version (from 2020 or something) which isn't called part 3 but instead is called "coda: the death of michael corleone"
then they changed the ending so that michael corleone doesn't die any more (spoilers)

he seems to have done new cuts of loads of his films recently, I'd quite like to see the Cotton Club updated version as I really like that one
I don't think I've seen any of his really terrible ones although I keep seeing Megalopolis on MUBI and wondering whether to give it a chance. also I have Finian's Rainbow on DVD due to box set madness
I will never watch Jack
