I shouldn't let this annoy me, but...

"The Register - Christmas 1984: The last hurrah for 8-bit home computers
Saturation point, and Nintendo and Sega, were just around the corner"

The last hurrah for 8-bit home computers that most people in the UK/Europe continued with for the next four or five years!

i'm going to buy one of those new mini spectrums and then type in every single program in every one of these

and then sigh endlessly when none of them work, obviously

Even though this is an old telly article I have just finished writing for my new blog, it is also about games, as well as adverts on the telly

They never went as far as Paul Daniels, though - making a game(s) for the Atari 800. :D

I've never been able to get into any Castlevania games, there's something about them that I find offputtingly annoying. Although the wall chickens did make me laugh.

also you could moonwalk up stairs, like Robocop on Spectrum, and swing the whip in any direction

also it's linear, so no tedious backtracking with constantly respawning ogrons

Once in Dixons as a small child I went mad on a Casio keyboard, merrily flailing away on it making noise and having a grand old time. Then some typical late 80s sales rep casually walked over, and switched it off while I was playing. Joke's on him years later, due to things like this (WARNING : VERY VERY LOUD)

Another thing I recall about Dixons is seeing a mid - late 80s low range DOS PC displaying a digtized picture of the trooping of the colour, and being amazed at seeing a full-colour photo on the PC monitor inbetween fake bar charts and text. In reality it was probably a dithered nightmare from the vantage point of today, but it was amazing in 1987 (less so in 1992)

My niece insists on playing my keyboard like a loon every time she visits. Eventually I hope that she's going to try to pick out a tune, but in the meantime I indulge her.

I've been listening through the "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die" list with a friend and this has also led me to properly listen to Neil Young for the first time. "After the Gold Rush" is my favourite album from the list so far that I hadn't heard before, it's wonderful
