I have watched all the episodes of The Book of Boba Fett now. It is pretty bad if four episodes in, your next episode up is an extra episode of The Mandalorian.
I am actually enjoying it though.

I watched some more things (mostly off mubi but also some other things):
The Greatest Love Of All Times - another Walerian Borowczyk short, about another pornographic artist or something. i only watched this two weeks ago but it seems to have been mostly erased from my mind
Nadja In Paris - short documentary (directed by eric rohmer, who i've heard of but don't think seen anything by before) about a foreign student in Paris in the 60s. I enjoyed this.
La Luxure (Lust) - another Jacques Demy short, presumably from a bigger set of films about the seven deadly sins. Anyway, this was great and I liked it a lot. Also the characters in it are reading a big book of heironymous bosch drawings, which reminded me of this adventure of mine from the olden days (2019) -
https://accumulationofthings.com/things ... -me-today/
The Gleaners And I: Two Years Later - sequel to a previous Agnes Varda documentary, in which she speaks to the various people she spoke to in the first film again, two years later, in the earlly 2000s sometime. amiable enough, although the first guy she spoke to was such a prick to her i almost turned it off in disgust. the first one was better, though, and this seemed pretty superfluous really.
Salut Les Cubains - Another Agnes Varda documentary, this time from the 60s, and about cuba. Its just loads of still photos with narration ove rthe top, but its really vibrant and great and i liked it a lot
Along The Coast - another agnes varda film, this time from the 50s and about Monte Carlo and various other places along the french riveira. made a good double bill with to catch a thief, which i watched a few days before i watched all these
Le sabotier du Val de Loire - another Jacques Demy film, this is a sort of pseudo documentary about one of the last of the traditional clog makers in france in the 60s. Really sad and evocative. I liked this a lot
From the Reports of Security Guards & Patrol Services – Part One - German short from the 80s (i think), based on a true a story, and part of a five or six part series, the rest of which aren't on mubi at all so i haven't seen them. Anyway, a woman and her two children climb up a terrifyingly large crane to protest about being homeless. This was also good, sad, slightly eerie, terrifying
Heaven Reaches Down To Earth - short film about two friends hiking in the mountains in south africa, falling in love. quite good but not amazing
Ocean Waves - ghibli film I got for christmas. I'd seen this one before but forgotten most of it (getting it mixed up with various bits of From Up On Poppy Hill and Only Yesterday, which are also about sixth formers). Anyway, the animations frequently lovely, and there's a couple of great scenes, and i didn't hate it or anything, but its basically about teenagers being the sort of stupid arseholes teenagers are, and i know what arseholes teenagers are, because i was once a teenager, and an arsehole. So watch only yesterday or from up on poppy hill instead if you want to watch a ghibli film about teenagers, is my advice
Meeting The Man: James Baldwin In Paris - this is an absolutely (accidentally) amazing documentary from the 60s, where a really incredible hapless, ignorant, entitled and thoroughly appalling british film maker man goes to Paris to interview the writer James Baldwin, and gets utterly infuriated with him for not putting up with any of his stupid bullshit. James Baldwin is incredible, basically, and makes me feel slightly ashamed that i've never actually read any of his books, and somehow only ever heard of him a couple of years ago when i watched If Beale Street Could Talk (which is based on one of his books).
Cenote - slightly odd documentary film about cenotes in Mexico -
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cenote - in which lots of long shots of water and underwater and falling water and other watery things are interspersed with detached voiceovers about the folklore around them, about people dying in them, and so on. I feel like I should have liked this more than i should, in that it combined lots of my favourite things (caves, waterfalls, folk tales, long slow super 8 footage of things), but it was an hour and half long when really it should have been half hour or something
Lakeside Suite - this was sort of thematically similar to Cenote, but on a lake instead of in a cave, and only 20 minutes long. Also filled with ominous shots of storms. I liked this quite a bit, but i can see why no one else really would.
The Twentieth Century - absolutely wild and amazingly absurd canadian film that reminded me quite a bit of that stump the guesser short vom recommended the other week (in that its a canadian, highly stylised, surreal, ahistorical comedy). a man must become prime minister of canada and save the nation from the absolute terror of the people of quebec. the trailer's not as good as the film (mainly because it doesn't show off the amazing fall of the house of usher style expressionist backdrops of most of the scenes) but here it is anyway:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=204j1n193hk
Los Conductos - quite strange Colombian crime film which has some really good scenes in it but which also sort of drags a lot at times even though its only about an hour long. but the good bits meant iw as glad i watched it

oh also, as my brain always is determined to find spurious connections between unrelated films i've just watched, in ocean waves one of the characters is called muto, and then in the twentieth century, one of the characters is called muto, and then los conductos was made by a company called mutokino!
my brain was quite pleased with that i can tell you

I read this the other day, which had a great title:
Colors: Where did they go? An investigation.
Why do so many TV shows and movies look like they were filmed in a gray wasteland?
This is the reason why I've never been able to bring myself to watch that remake of Suspiria from 2018 in full. It's not quite a gray wasteland, but there are more than three colours in the world, Mr Luca so-called Guadagnino.

yes
On the one hand, it's good that it's attempting something different and not just being a pointless faithful remake
But on the other hand the different things are "less colours" and "more Thom Yorke" so it's never really made it onto my list of things to watch

And to think, people mock old computers for only displaying 16 colours, then go on to watch gray-tastic films for hours on end.
Bah!

Its also really weird that hug enew TVs are always sold with an effects reel of incredibly vibrant super colourful images and then when you get it home no film ever again shows any of those colours at all (except for maybe a pixar film if you're lucky)

A most (and moist) enjoyable review, Tom!
The additional bit 'bout the director who couldn't see the 3D effects he was filming, tickled me also.

oh man I just watched "Pig", the Nicolas Cage film from last year, and it was absolutely beautiful and heartbreaking and wonderful
My only complaint was that everyone mumbled so much that I had to turn the subtitles on

Thanks for reminding me.

I watched the French Dispatch last Monday. I thought it was technically lovely and charming and beautiful, but I didn't feel very invested in any of what was happening.
Also I watched Dune today, which I thought was great, even if it only feels like half a film.
I watched the French dispatch this week. I don't think it helped that I've been suffering from illness stupidity most of the week, but I found it a bit much to take in quite often. Subtitles, voiceovers, various intricate lists, diagrams, full pages of text, split screen stuff, english dialogue, French dialogue, mumbled dialogue, and often all at the same. I found it a bit bewildering
(I really liked the Jeffrey Wright section - it probably helped that I'd seen that James Baldwin thing on mubi recently - but didn't enjoy the other two so much - although Frances McDormand was wonderful)

I loved it, although I thought the Frances McDormand section was significantly weaker than the other two, despite the presence of Frances McDormand
