Wee Barry
Wee Barry
i have been trying, once again, to get into japanese rpgs, and strategy rpgs
So far i have tried the Megami Tensai series, starting with the Digital Devil Story book. The early games seem to be more my thing, without the social shit from the Persona games, but also really hard. Also mostly japanese apart from some fan translations. Old games on nes, snes, gameboy and gamegear seem amazing.
The Fire Emblem games, particularly the 3DS ones. I quite liked the Awakening demo but is too expensive to buy, so got Shadows of Valentia Echoes, which is quite a nice remake of a japan only snes game. Only just got it and started it
I have discovered the Super Robot Taisen/Wars series. About 60 odd games going back to gameboy, msx and wonderswan. Again pretty much all japanese apart from some fan translations. Great turn-based strategy stuff with cool battle animation scenes. Again the older ones seem to be more my thing. Particuarly on gameboy, colour, and gba
There is also a gameboy colour game called Super Robot Pinball which is utterly joyous

Re: Weebary
I got Fire Emblem Warriors thinking it would be a JRPG. I was very wrong.
Re: Weebary
the gba fire emblem game is very good (i think it might just be called fire emblem, although its not the technically the first one), if you can find that anywhere (it might be on the 3ds eshop, but i don't know). there's another gba one (the sacred stones?) that's decent but not as good.
awakenings is great but i haven't played the ones after that because if you thought that was expensive, for the next one they decided to split it into three games, two which were entirely seperate full price 3ds cartridges, and the third part was a full price dlc download. fukc off nintendo

Re: Weebary
also i want to play those robot games now.
Re: Weebary
also supposedly the new yakuza game is a turn based jrpg thing for some reason, instead of a beat em up rpg thing
Re: Weebary
Who is Wee Barry?
All I play is Dead Cells at the moment. I really feel like I should play something else. But I pick up the Switch and there it is

Re: Weebary
Is that Fates, the one split into three? That is available as all-in-one now on the eshop.
Sacred Stones is the free one we got with the 3DS ambassador program, but yeah it never grabbed me and i'd rather play the other one.
I'm still playing Shadows of Valentia Echoes, which was actually a japanese nes game, not snes, called Fire Emblem Gaiden. It was the second one from 1992, the first one was 1990

Re: Weebary
dead cells does look interesting, along with a lot of other rogue-likes which suddenly now appeals to me
Re: Weebary
ves the rogue-like formula is catnip to me.

Re: Weebary
i played a remake of the first one (fire emblem shadow dragon or something) on the DS, but I have no idea how much of the first one was left in it. anyway it was okay i suppose I can't actually remember.
i also had a gamecube one (good), and a wii one (good until there was a mission near the end that was impossible because one of my characters wasn't levelled up enough and he had to fight an entire fight solo against someone who was levelled up way to much and it was shit).

Re: Weebary
I was hopelessly addicted to the mobile fire emblem for a while, even though it was one of those mobile games with no real game, just a lot of things to collect and the temptation of spending money to collect them faster
I had to delete it eventually

Re: Weebary
That's probably all mobile games isn't it

I hope everyone else did the usual Anal Male Crossing thing where they bought it when it came out and then played it with increasing obsession for about 5 months and then got overwhelmed and quit forever

Re: Weebary
I watched someone else (Ryan from Consolevania) play it instead
Anybody who comes into the n3ta forest will be lost.
Everybody will become a Homfrus.
Everybody, Homfrus.
So, he's not here any more.

Re: Weebary
i would hav edone but luckily i don't have a switch and now it's too late
Re: Weebary
I was too busy playing Breath of the Wild and then when I eventually stopped everyone seemed bored of Annulment Crusting so I didn't bother getting it
Re: Weebary/weebery?
Oh, other things on 3DS:
Shin Megami Tensai: Strange Journey Redux - spin-off from main series (another one). Set in antarctica, where anomaly spews forth alternate realities and demons. First person dungeon crawler. Barely played, but like so far.
Severed - another fp dungeon crawler, using the stylus to slice of beastie's limbs to equip for yourself. Pretty cool, barely played it. I wanted to get both of these while they were on sale in the eshop, to play properly later.
Sega 3D Classics - OutRun and Super Hang-On remade in 3D. Brilliant. Lots of other Sega classics too

Re: Wee Barry
also i have spent the whole last week trying to work out what the title of this thread is actually a pun of but i cannot
Re: Wee Barry
I forgot to download the playstation plus games in January, annoyingly. One of them (Control) looked quite good. I would almost certainly have never played it, but still.
Re: Wee Barry
Anyway in the spirit of collecting more things, I have downloaded ratchet and clank.

Re: Wee Barry
Wonderswan is such a brilliant name for a handheld console. I've always liked it. Also they brought out a "Crystal Wonderswan" at one point, I believe (it was made of see-through plastic)
Re: Wee Barry
I'm not sure i've ever seen a wonderswan, even in pictures. i hope it looks exactly like a swan, somehow

Re: Wee Barry
Here's the Wikipedia page for it:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WonderSwan
It does not look like a swan, sadly, but it does have quite a novel control system which allows it to be played both in portrait and landscape mode.
What with this and another post I just made, I've got swans on the brain tonight

Re: Wee Barry
Weren't 93.28% of games on the Wonderswan RPGs? I remember being impressed with that Formula 1-style game on the machine, but I bet even that was an RPG somehow.

Wee Barry does so love his games.

Re: Wee Barry
Especially Japanese ones.
I have just discovered the existence of Octopath Traveller. It looks rather nice. It's on PC too, having first come out on Switch.
As is The Alliance Alive. I played the demo on 3DS and enjoyed it, and have now found it's on PC.

Re: Wee Barry
I would like to play that octopath game, even though or maybe because is the stupidest word ever made
Re: Wee Barry
Also today, 16 years after raz started the n3ta games thread with a post about planescape torment, I have bought planescape torment
Re: Wee Barry
Next I'll have to finally get round to watching big fish, 14 years after Vom started the n3ta film thread with a post about big fish
Re: Wee Barry
Those things never happened and you can't prove they did
Re: Wee Barry
Valley
This was a nice game. It's a first person adventure with some combat, and an interesting energy system where you can give and take life to / from the surrounding environment. When you die, your resurrection affects the environment, so you have to go around healing trees and animals to restore the balance, which is lovely and oddly therapeutic.
Also there is a grappling hook, and a doomsday device, and the music is nice. And sometimes you get to run REALLY fast. I finished it this morning, and it was quite short (6-7 hrs) but it looks like there's quite a bit of bonus stuff to find so I will probably play more

Re: Wee Barry
I have set my ps4 to download all those free ps4 games. I assume they will take approximately 68 thousand hours to download, due to everyone downloading them simultaneoasl all at once
Re: Wee Barry
Ooh Enter the Gungeon, I'll take that.
I already have Rez, of course.

Having also previously bought it on Dreamcast, PS2, 360...
