I've managed to constantly forget to post this for two weeks now but

Happy (belated) 40th anniversary to David Stewart (the other one) and Barbara Gaskins' none-more-'80s deconstruction of "It's My Party" inexplicably topping the UK charts

I love that version, I think I was familiar with it before hearing the original. It's mad how adventurous the UK charts were in the early 80s - 1981 was the same year O Superman got to number 2, and a year later this was on Top Of The Pops.

I came into this from the "Canterbury Scene"--a sort of small circle of musicians who ran along a parallel path of prog-psychedelic monsters of the late '60s but never quite lost that whimsy or took themselves so seriously as a Floyd or a Yes or a E/L/P

And I was amazed to see these artists who had spent a decade as technically proficient on the fringes of experimental jazz-prog-folk-neo-classical-avant-noise-everything also cross over onto the Top Of The Pops with a cover of a teenybopper classic like Dave&Barb there or everyone's favorite communist Robert Wyatt with the Monkees' "I'm A Believer" (take THAT, Smashmouth!). And then they'd go right back to aggressively experimental madness.

I was also surprised to discover that they had influenced huge pop acts in the UK like Tears For Fears (cf. their surprisingly faithful cover of Wyatt's Sea Song) but remained virtually unknown in the US.

I'm rather taken with this indie ditty:

Coach Party: FLAG (Feel Like A Girl)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxyo5ZXoBgQ

But I really like it in conjunction with that Georgian-ish-period-set video. It's very basic, and some of the camera zooms put me in mind of an 80s-style pop video, but I just dig that song/video combo. :)

The duo did some other interesting/decent stuff too, including this, which I'm particularly fond of:

I kept getting the two of them confused for ages. I think there is another Dave Stewart who did music for Victor Lewis-Smith's programmes, or maybe it's the same one as above.

Wait, which English keyboardist Dave Stewart who formed a synth pop duo with his then-girlfriend as the singer is the other Dave Stewart?

actually i was being intentionally obtsue (although reading it back it also sounds weirdly aggressive, which wasn't my intention obviously).

I meant I'd never heard of this "its my party" dave stewart for some reason (even though i think i've heard that version of that song before probably)

Didn't one of the Dave Stewarts rebrand themselves as Dave A Stewart?

There was also a Dave Stewart who played in goal for Leeds Utd, but I don't believe he had much input into 'There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart). :)

I'd figured as much, I was just having fun with how similar their paths to fame were.

I can't remember if I had before mentioned that, prior to the solo duo career with Barb, Dave "Party" Stewart was a member of EGG 🥚

I watched an hour of the first episode so far. Best bit is five minutes arsing about because George gets an electric shock from his microphone

Got onto the second episode now where George comes back. Genuine belly laugh when Mal Evans brings in Magic Alex's prototype "invention" to show them. Can't quite work out why they kept him around-they clearly know he's a charlatan who is ripping them off.
