Re: Moo Sick Therad
My sister had a minidisc player and a small stack of multicoloured recordable minidiscs, which she used for university purposes.

This thread has taken an extremely technosexxus turn. Woah!
Re: Moo Sick Therad
Does it count as listening to music if you just continue to keep mumbling to yourself the Mansun lyric: "The only pureness left is preached for me by Marx", as you watch the news?
Re: Moo Sick Therad
The new arab strap album is brilliant

Hooray that is beautiful and also gives me an excuse to segue into a completely pointless story:
I have a Stock Aiken & Waterman collection on my playlist because the older I become, the more I unironically love the shitty pop-of-the-day I accurately dismissed as cheap instantaneously dated slick plastic garbage back when I was an intolerable young music snob.
Among all the lovingly extruded prefab mediocrities performed by pretty 20somethings of marginal vocal talent "I'd Rather Jack" by The Reynolds Girls stood out to me for its tone-deafness, both in the sense of poor vocal timbre and an unusual mean-spiritedness in sniping various musicians for the sin of failing to stem the inexorable tides of time and still getting slotted onto playlists.
The line about "A-M, F-M, all that jazz/We'd rather sing along with Yaz[sic]" piqued my interest, though, so I plugged that name into Spotify, which yielded the synth duo of Alison Moyet and That Other One From Depeche Mode, and gave them a listen.
I was impressed by the dark, intimate glamour of their sound and lyrics, while being somewhat surprised that something as juvenile and artificial as The Reynolds Girls was namechecking this as the new regime of what they apparently wanted to listen to instead of poor dead Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, and the Rolling Stones. (Also, in comparing dates, they made their mark in the early '80s, while Stock Aiken Etc. had their heyday in the late-80s/early-90s, which was probably antediluvian by Reynolds Girl standards)
Later on, I'm going down the wikihole on the SA&W machine, whereupon I discover that they were refering to "Yazz" with two Z'z, which, upon further research, was a perfectly generic '90s techno/pop outfit.
Also, that "I'd Rather Jack" poisoned the music-biz well for the sisters Reynolds and killed their careers even though they were only singing what the producers had foisted upon them and that S/A/W had written it as a spiteful little joke because they kept getting passed over for awards in favor of "serious" AOR pop acts "such as Enya and Steve Winwood" (thank you wikipaedia).
NOW, LET US LICK THE EGG
Re: Moo Sick Therad
I kept expecting Alison Moyet to turn up in that song, and at first i thought it was a 12 inch Yazoo remix or something. Still nice though.
Also I have been listening to Gary Numan, both old and new. His new stuff is rather brilliant, has a nice industrial sound.

Re: Moo Sick Therad
I've lost track of some of Numan's newer stuff, but the songs I do recall hearing reminded me a bit of Nine Inch Nails, which is no bad thing in ma book!
Re: Moo Sick Therad
Also: hurrah for completely pointless stories - I enjoyed reading it! *thumbs up*
Re: Moo Sick Therad
that yazz album was the first cd i ever had (in 1988 or whenever it came out)
Re: Moo Sick Therad
One of the few things I remember about Yazz is that her husband was called Jazz (Summers), and he had a real bad reputation for ripping off the bands he managed.

It's been far too long 'Magic' by Ladyhawke:
