That's in my neck of the woods - all the little places with the river Cray running through them, up to Crayford (where we lived when I was very very small) where it joins the Darent. Paper mills and gunpowder works were the big local industries back in the day.

My uncle (my aunt's husband) who died a year ago was from Foot's Cray and the only member of the family who actually came from the Dartford / Crayford / Sidcup area where my parents and my mum's brother ended up living. Although he and my aunt moved to Aylesbury in the 60s with all the new town development creating jobs there.

Best football chat.

Men of Kent live east of the Medway, Kentish Men west of it (making me one of the latter). The story is that it relates to the fact that Kent east of the Medway negotiated with William the Conqueror to keep their own customs (gavelkind etc.) and weren't actually conquered, hence why Kent has the motto 'Invicta' (Unconquered) on its crest. This story seems quite old (Francis Grose mentions it) but I don't know how much truth there is in it - although gavelkind did survive in Kent when other local laws and customs elsewhere didn't, so who knows.

Somehow I initially added this direct to your original post, and then nearly warned you. I am the master of buttons this day.

Having looked into it in more detail, it appears that the distinction wasn't made until the 18th century - the story about the inhabitants of Kent meeting William the Conqueror at Swanscombe and negotiating a settlement is in William Camden's 'Britannia' in the late 16th century, but nothing is said about two groups. Some notes by Samuel Pegge from 1736 allude to it - though, pace Wikipedia, he doesn't seem to actually discuss or explain it. There's a poem by Kit Smart from 1758 that refers to 'These Kentish Men, those Men of Kent'. The 1788 second edition of Francis Grose's 'Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue' discusses the two terms and has the Medway as the dividing line, and this then gets picked up thereafter - there's a 'funny' article in the Times in 1790 which uses the distinction as its basis, presumably drawing on Grose for inspiration. Everything else seems to have accreted to the story thereafter. I would guess the whole thing arose because people felt there ought to be a reason why these two terms coexist - but the reason is just that the word 'Kentish' exists and therefore gives you an alternative to 'men of Kent' that doesn't exist for most counties. Cornwall and Lancashire are the ones that come to mind.

Even better football chat than before.

Is it true that if you want to refer to both Kentish Men and Men of Kent, the correct combined term is a "a bunch of kents, the lot of ya"?

from th ebbc report on that match:

"By far the most entertaining aspect of this game, from a Young Boys perspective at least, was the atmosphere created by their supporters.

The fans in the lower two tiers choreographed their entrance just before kick-off, so those in the higher section came in first, all wearing what appeared to be matching yellow ponchos. Then came those in the lower tier, wearing black, to match their team's colours.

Part way through the opening period, they all turned their back on the game, before taking the ponchos off and twirling them round their heads. Those on the top followed that by throwing them down on those below.

The display was colourful and inventive, which is more than could be said for their team."
