Sort of like Viz, but rubbish
Sort of like Viz, but rubbish

Did you buy/read any of the Viz comic knock offs of the 90s/00s?
I've still got the first issues of Brain Damage and Lazy Frog, much to my shame.
I couldn't abide Smut, Spit, and Zit, though.

Re: Sort of like Viz, but rubbish
i'm not sure i ever saw any not-viz's, ever
Re: Sort of like Viz, but rubbish
I think I bought Oink! once
Re: Sort of like Viz, but rubbish
I liked Oink! I even had the flexi-disc that came with issue one (I think it was issue one). It was Viz for kids, really, wasn't it?
Re: Sort of like Viz, but rubbish
I think I remember some of these. Not loads about them, but their existence. I think my Dad had one or two issues or zit or something.

I definitely bought one, Smut maybe. I just remember feeling that they just didn't get what made Viz great. It was just crude rather than interesting in any way.
Re: Sort of like Viz, but rubbish
i've barely even seen viz, apart from the top tips online and the profanisaurus, and the amazing Amiga game

Stuff like Jack Black and his dog Silver, Captain Firestone, the Vibrating Bum-Faced Goats, are a cut above what you'd read in the Viz knock-offs.
George Bestial, however... it's too dark for me...

The amiga game was funny. Especially as a pre-teen. I remember it being really hard though

Re: Sort of like Viz, but rubbish
I remember finding a copy of Smut stuffed behind some other books in the town library. I must have been 14 because I was surprised by the actual pornography it had.
Cthulu bum you!
Re: Sort of like Viz, but rubbish
There was a lad at my school who reckoned Smut was better than Viz, and this made me furious at the time! I was genuinely annoyed with him, and I think he thought I was going to hit him at one point!richschnauzer wrote: ↑Thu Feb 09, 2023 7:17 pm I remember finding a copy of Smut stuffed behind some other books in the town library. Re: Sort of like Viz, but rubbish
Oink! was genuinely really great, like what a kid's comic in the 80s should have been like rather than Whizzer & Chips or Beano, etc. Not to take away from the achievements of those, but Oink was much more in tune with the times. But by the late 80s British comics were starting to contract severely, and only more adult-orientated stuff like 2000ad remained.
Another point in Oink!'s favour is that it had Frank Sidebottom as a regular contributor, because the editor (?) was a pre-fame but post-Fall Marc "Lard" Riley.
(Hopefully that's not too big)

I'd like to kiss and sniff Frank Sidebottom's head.
