ehis did Mayor of Casterbridge for his A level, and I don't think he liked it either. I'm beginning to suspect that the only people who like Thomas Hardy are English teachers.

I can't recall reading any Thomas Hardy. I've read a few Hardy Boys books, though.

Nancy Drew was better

I learnt the word: 'jalopy' from the Hardy Boys boks. Also, 'sedan', which for a while, I believed to be a car maker!

At my school around 1992 / 93 we looked at Shakespeare, particularly Romeo & Juliet and Macbeth. Similar to the Terrence Stamp thing described above, we ended up watching videos of the late 60s / early 70s movie adaptions of both plays. For the former it was the 1968 Franco Zeffirelli one that's quite famous, and for Macbeth we looked at the horrifying 1971 version. That was directed by the widower of the recently (in 1971) murdered Sharon Tate and noted wrong 'un, Roman Polanski. We were all very surprised when we saw it had a cameo from a young Keith Chegwin.

I hoep Keith Chegwin added a Swap Shop element to Macbeth - "I've got someone here who wants to swap a dagger for poison, as a murder weapon".

Lady Jessica from Dune was also in Macbath 1971
