Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
I remember Tarantino arguing that RP wasn't guilty of rape, it was statutory rape and there's a difference. It's a strange argument to make.

Imagine being in Ian Ogilvy's snug bedroom! It even has a portable telly in there! Cool!
Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
I watched that Hughie Green documentary on C5, last night. My word, he was a 'delight', wasn't he?
I was impressed by his attempts to incite a military-backed revolution in Britain, via the closing song on Opportunity Knocks.
I can see where Neol Edmonds got all his best ideas from, now.

We sung that in the playground at school.
The boys, not the girls, obvs. They had more sense than to do such a thing.

I *think* Hello Tosh is a parody of the Sayle ditty.
Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
it is kind of weird to get ian dury to parody alexei sayle who was doing a song that was almost like a parody of an ian dury song in the first place

The Police should absolutely raid that house at 4am in the morning, and arrest that bloke. He's hiding a terrible secret.

Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
The murderer in an episode of Inspector Morse. A good man. A family man. It was an accident... and then someone found out... blackmail... but then they got greedy... what else could I do, they were going to ruin everything... some at the table knew what they were eating... once everyone's plates were empty, I'd tell them everything... it'd be okay, because the authorities wouldn't believe they didn't know what they were eating, and they'd end up in prison... it gets easier the more you do it... Buy British Pork!

Rab C Nesbitt is on the telly ('That's TV' Freeview channel 65) tonight, and I'm curious to find out whether I'll still like it or not.

I too absolutely love Stuart Millard's videos, he's great.
Also a bit late with this but in regards to British Pork, I made this once

(The computer voice at the end is meant to sound like some of the AppleTalk text to speech used in some Blue Jam jingles)

I don't like The Goons.
There, said it.
I've tried to get into it, but I just find it very annoying.

I've found it works in small doses - one episode every blue moon. The Last Goon Show Of All should be fired into the sun though.

Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
Oh no, I love the Goons (to the extent that I am a member of the Goon Show Preservation Society, and receive a magazine full of recycled jokes and a small amount of interesting documentary material four times a year). I came to them in about 1991, just after I'd seen Monty Python for the first time, and they made me laug and laug. The later series are rather ropey, mind you, and The Last Goon Show Of All isn't much good except for (vicarious) nostalgia; weirdly the run-through (released on one of the compendium sets) is a much better performance. But the shows from about 1954 to 1957 are largely amazing. I used to love Bluebottle, but these days I think Major Bloodnok is my favourite. One of these days I will make good on my long-standing threat to put together a really comprehensive Goon Show website.
I will say that if I'd heard Hancock's Half Hour first then that might be my favourite old thing rather than the Goons. I am also a member of the Tony Hancock Appreciation Society, although it didn't do me much good when the 1960s ATV Hancock series finally came out on DVD; my copy got lost in the post and the bloody things can't be had for love nor money.

That is really interesting, I never knew that about Tony Hancock.
My way to the office often goes past the Grafton Arms, the last time I had a drink there they still had the Goons Corner. Very nice to see.

Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
I've heard of it, I think (I believe it's been referred to a few times in the GSPS magazine) but never got round to listening to it, likewise the one that the Tony Hancock society people run - the latter threatened to do an episode about 'codswallop' based on my OED article, but I don't know if they have yet.blombluss wrote: ↑Wed Dec 20, 2023 7:37 pm You might already know of this, Bruce, but Goon Pod:
