I didn't particularly like him, and I have absolutely no idea why! :o I *think* I felt that he promoted the BBC Model B over the Spectrum, and I didn't like that, even as a Commodore man. :)

It's testament to how good the adverts were that I spent countless hours imagining how cool the other 8 bit computers must be, when in reality they were almost interchangeably identical

Here's what I have also played so far:

Columns - fuck off columns
Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine - better than columns, probably better than dr mario, but still not very good. i'm not sure why so many "tetris clones" never really cloned tetris but just copied each other in so many terrible ways
space harrier 2 - i never even knew there was a space harrier 2. anyway, this is terrible, due to stuttery framerate, juddery controls, awful music. luckily arcade space harrier's included in a few different yakuza games, so i can just play that instead.
golden axe - just as utterly impossible as i always remember it being. still can't even get past the first bloody level and those two stupid giants with hammers, the bastards.
sonic 1 - fuck off sonic
sonic 2 - and fuck off tails
sonic 3 - fr some reason this doesn't have sonic 3 on it at all. i don't know why (it also doesn't seem to have any of the ecco the dolphin games either)
sonic 3d - it does have this though. and it's shit
comix zone - hooray! this is amazing and i love it. i'm not sure i've ever even really heard of it before, but it's great, even if it is impossible. excellent music, excellent graphics, excellent comic book page conceit, excellent intro movie - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-Ycr6aUU6M - excellent everything really
super thunder blade - so slow. i kept dying. also this really feels like it's basically a spectrum game, for some reason. made me wish i was playing operation wolf with the world's crappiest lightgun again
virtua fighter 2 - i had no idea there was a mega drive virtua fighter 2. it's sprite based rather than 3d, and also even worse than actual virtua fighter 2.
vectorman - i liked the intro, which is basically wall e, but what if one of the wall e's picked up a nuclear missile and it became his head and turned him evil. i'm not sure the game is any good though
vectorman 2 - vectormans back, and this time he's tumbling all the way down from space into a great big void for some reason. and then i died on the second level and gave up forever.
wonderboy in monster land - shit in every conceivable way
wonderboy 3 - shit in slightly less ways, but still shit probably

plus theres another 40 games to go or something. i will probably play all the rpgs, and maybe gunstar heroes again, because i like gunstar heroes.

I bought that 1987 Monty Mole Christmas game on Steam, for just under £2.99. It was originally given away free with Your Sinclair. Hm.

Also the references to it being a free game remain, due to them probably just using a TZX file. Double hm.

Anyway, it's absolutely impossible. But I like how Monty looks when he jumps about

Yesterday I played gorogoa, a very nice but also very short sort of point and click puzzle game. A couple of the puzzles seemed a bit obtuse, only resolved by near random clicking, but mostly it was really lovely (for the whole hour or so it lasted)

Is that the spin/rotate jump a la Monty On The Run on the C64?

Because I always thought you could swap Monty Mole with the player character in Impossible Mission, seeing as they both have spin jumps, and thus creating two bootlegs with different 'tones' to the original versions! :D

shadow tactics: blades of the shogun - real time strategy game based around being a team of ninjas, which sounds like it might be good (i was kind of hoping it'd be like a sort of fluid dynamic version of fire emblem) but is unfortunately utterly tedious.

its got similar sort of stealth style stuff as the metal gear solid games, which means 90% of the game seems to be accidentally triggering alarms, and causing hundreds of guards to come running out.

whereas at least in metal gearyou can at least have some fun murdering everyone sometimes, in this it means you basically fail and have t go back to your last save, so instead of actually using any tactics you're just quick saving every ten seconds and then redoing the next bit over and over again until you do it right.

also i haven't actually got off the tutorial level yet, so maybe it improves when i'm less shit. but also if the first level's this fiddly and unfun, it probably just gets worse later on. but who knows

I just really like how cute and chubby Monty Mole looks. It's not a spinning thing, he's more sort of leaping forward with two little paws ahead of him.
blombluss wrote: Tue Dec 27, 2022 3:23 am Montezuma's Revenge > Chubby Gristle! :D
My god, Montezuma's Revenge. It was funny how if the little guy you were playing fell too far, instead of just dying from fall damage he'd be all crushed up like pixel art Wile E Coyote. And I remember the cover art of Chubby Gristle, though I didn't play it for years.
