Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
I watched two films from my backlog this weekend because my rented ones hadn't arrived yet (yes I still do DVDs in the post rental, yes I live in the past) but then I turned tonight's one off and looked over at the shelves and the rented ones were sat there all along and now I feel like I probably need to be put into an old people's home for my own safety
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
it all worked out ok though because the two I watched were both amazing
Decline of Western Civilization pt 3 - best but saddest part of the trilogy, you can actually feel Penelope Spheeris' heart breaking over the course of the film, also punk rock
Warrior - this follows the standard sports / boxing movie framework pretty predictably but so fucking well, also Nick Nolte is the ultimate grizzled dad

Matinee - i'd never seen this before for some reason. all the b-movie and john goodman bits were amazing, so its a shame the first half hour is mostly all about some of the worst schoolchildren actors ever.
also i liked naomi watts's surprise appearance in the pretend herbie movie they watch half way through

Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
Matinee is a Joe Dante film. Dante is responsible for one of the best - if not THE best - times I ever had at the cinema. I may have talked about this before somewhere, but when me and my parents went to see his 1987 movie Innerspace, it was a genuinely magical time. The whole audience were really into the film - even some of the cinema staff were watching it towards the end - and it remains the only screening I've been to where everyone applauded at the end. It was one of those moments were all the stars align somehow.
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
Excellent! That's a nice story.
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
Excellent. I love inner space
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
Also I'm not sure I knew inner space was a joe Dante film. While watching matinee though I said "hooray those two actors were inner space together", as well as being pleased to see the old man killed by his own snow plow from gremlins too
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
Who was presumably only ever allowed to be in joe Dante films
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
Also i think I've said this before too(presumably when we last chatted about inner space on old dead n3ta) but I saw inner space at a friends birthday party when I was ten, and we all absolutely loved it too. Also this party was held in a pub (maybe the boy lived there I can't remember) and after inner space someone put on some American ninja film (.even though we were ten year olds, and that presumably wasn't for ten year olds). Then while we were all recreating the moves, one of the other children fell down the stairs and broke his leg or something, and the party was cancelled and we all had to go home while they waited for the ambulance to come and collected this screaming child
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
I've never ever been in that pub since, even though it's still there, 35 years later
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
I like to imagine inner space is still playing on the tv there

Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
today i watched earwig. it was directed by Lucile Hadzihalilovic (who directed innocence and evloution, both of which i liked), and it's based on a abook by brian catling (who wrote the vorrh, which i liked), it has a nice soundtrack (reminded me of the music in upstream color), it looks great and has a wonderful atmsophere of dread and misery, and also i didn't understand a single second of it at all, neither plot wise or symbolism wise. just utterly baffling obtuse
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
oh I was thinking of watching that. I liked evolution a lot
but the idea of teeth made of ice is ultra horrifying to me
but the idea of teeth made of ice is ultra horrifying to me
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
also its saliva ice
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
i don't know if thats more or less horrifying
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
also maybe I was just being dense and you'll understand what it all meant but i still haven't managed any even vaguely coherent idea
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
The black cauldron - when I was little (seven) they went on and on about this on going live of whatever all the time, and I wanted to see it more than anything ever, but then it was an absolutely massive flop and probably never even got released in Essex (and even if it did Maldon didn't have a cinema so we almost certainly wouldn't have been taken to see it anyway).
Anyway a couple of years later the little mermaid was a huge success (we did see that at the cinema, cause our parents left us there so they could go shopping or something), Disney was revived, and they spent the rest of the 20th century desperately pretending the early 80s never happened, and the poor old black cauldron was disappeared down a great big hole, never to be seen again
But it's on Disney plus now so I watched it and it was shite

Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
40 years I've been dreaming about this
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
Anyway, if you've ever wondered what gollum would be like if he was a dog with a moustache, this is the film for you
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
And also if you've ever wondered what it'd be like if someone used the music from the ark of the covenant scene in Indiana Jones for an entire unrelated film
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
I saw that at some point, I thought it was alright. It was before I started writing letterboxd reviews so I remember nothing else, not even the dog
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
i saw it and wrote on n3ta about it
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
and also bruce maybe did too
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
anyway the animated movie sensation of 1985 that i did successfully pester my parents into taking me to see was the care bears movie
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
1985 was the high point of all animated film history ever
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
the care bears movie is not on disney plus

Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
I might have seen some of the Black Cauldron at some point. I've definitely read the source material (Chronicles of Prydain). The books are good.

Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
looks like i'll have to subscribe to mgm plus next then
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
(not that i've ever subscribed to disney plus obviously)
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
I've never seen The Balck Cauldrone. Or The Neverending Stroy. I've promised myself that I'll watch Stroy someday before I exit this earthly plane, and hopefully not with Limahl warbling in the bkg.
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
That was on bbc over Christmas. Despite not having seen it since primary school, I somehow recognised it within seconds of turning the tv on (it was the bit where the boy has to walk between two statues without getting incinerated or whatever)
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
Men
fucking hell what is wrong with Alex Garland (in a mostly positive way, I certainly liked this a lot more than Annihilation)

Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
I'd like to see that (also I liked annihilation a lot, though no one else seems to have done)
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
Also I don't know why it's taken me six years, but I finally watched the shape of water. I've often wondered what would have happened if Amelie had fallen in love with a merman in 1950s America, and now I know
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
(I liked this quite a bit until a cat got eaten and no one seemed to mind)
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
After that I wanted everyone to get eaten by cats but they never did (spoiler)
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
oh, I got the impression that everyone liked it except me. I felt left out. we both felt left outdng wrote: Wed Jan 18, 2023 4:53 pm I'd like to see that (also I liked annihilation a lot, though no one else seems to have done)
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
some sort of annihilated/alienated pun i can't quite come with would fit here
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
Jojo Rabbit - this was pretty good
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
Not a film, but I tried the new HBO/BBC pirate sitcom Our Flag Means Death, larst nacht.
I wasn't impressed.

Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
I hoep that new Simon Bird comedy 'Everyone Else Burns', on C4 tonight, confounds my expectations, and turns out to be half-decent.
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
I'm not holding my breath. I never got into Friday Night Dinner (though I know people who like it) and that King is Dead, or whatever it was called, didn't look appealing at all.
