Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
Last night was the 32nd anniversary of Thames TV being throttled, so I put up this article partially about it, but mainly about other ITV regions going kablooey:

Was that when ITV’s Oracle went to live on a farm and got replaced by Teletext?

Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
I've finally finished my series of articles on the 1979 ITV strike over on Blammo. I've been working on this for a couple of months now, and the third and final part just went up. Should anyone be interested, you can read it all here:

https://blammo.site/the-great-big-utter ... st-part-2/

Also before that, I put up a load of info on the first broadcasts of Twin Peaks on British televison gathered from the Radio Times, prompted by David Lynch's passing

So this post isn't all me me me, here's a thing about an unofficial Amiga point and click game about Neighbours, released in 1991

Yes. And sorry for not seeing your post until now, Pual. It's actually weirdly more complicated than that, and I might write something on it in the future.Pual wrote: Wed Jan 01, 2025 6:11 pm Was that when ITV’s Oracle went to live on a farm and got replaced by Teletext?

Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
This one must have been when I had my 13th birthday party and some of my friends stayed over, and we all slept in the living room for some reason (presumably because none of our bedrooms were big enough to provide space for three boys in sleeping bags all at once) and we watched this because my friend was obsessed with it and i'd never seen any other episodes of twin peaks so the last episode was the first episode i ever sawTwin Peaks
Sat 22nd Jun 1991, 23:30 on BBC Two England
Another opportunity to see the final episode of this offbeat soap opera, directed by David Lynch, starring Kyle MacLachlan, Michael Ontkean
A queen is escorted to an appointment at the end of the world but, in order to play the white knight and rescue her, Agent Dale Cooper must face a final confrontation with the evil that lurks in the woods surrounding Twin Peaks.
Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
best birthday party ever, obviously
Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
also the next episode of twin peaks i ever saw was the twin peaks film
Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
then finally i got to watch all of twin peaks properly from the start 20 years later when vom sent me the original serieses on dvd for some reason (maybe 2010? or possibly a bit earlier and/or a bit later, i can't remember)
Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
anyway ever since my 13th birthday party i've always wanted to just squeeze entire tubes of tooth paste into the sink whenever i'm brushing my teeth
Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
but never have
Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
and headbutt the mirror
Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
i'm waiting until my mirror malfunctions to try that
Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
i feel like that scene would have been a lot more powerful, and more Lynchian, if there was no mirror malfunction

I love this. Lovely old Ray Wise, star of Twin Peaks and Robocop.

Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
I recently finally bought that Lynch biography / autobiography, "Room To Dream". (It alternates between chapters written by a professional writer who interviewed various people, and then Lynch himself commenting on the previous bit, and adding other memories that occur to him - an odd but very effective way to go about it)
Anyway, the previous video that David linked to reminded me of a bit in that book where Angelo Badalamenti decides to do some deliberately silly vocalizations for some track they were recording for use in Wild At Heart, which seemingly went full on Vic Reeves Club Singer mode from the sound of things, and David Lynch laughed so hard that he claims he got a hernia from it. He described it as "like a lightbulb exploding in my groin" or something. He then went on to claim that he decided to put off the club-singer-induced operation until after shooting the film, which he said he did "mainly sitting down"

Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
I've tried three new-ish BBC sitcoms, not taken to any of 'em, so have ended up watching Arrested Development. Yet again. Great stuff.
Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
I'm watching "Seinfeld". Had never seen an episode before a couple of weeks ago, somehow. It's quite funny.

Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
I've just started on Grange Hill (Series 8) - the first appearance of Gonch Gardner (who I looked a bit like, apparently!). The acting is bloody awful, but I'm enjoying it.

Stewpot Stewart's range of anguished gurning faeceial expressions (3) are damn annoyang.blombluss wrote: Fri Nov 07, 2025 1:54 am I've just started on Grange Hill (Series 8) - the first appearance of Gonch Gardner (who I looked a bit like, apparently!). Never watch the series 8 finale 'musical' episode.blombluss wrote: Fri Nov 07, 2025 1:54 am I've just started on Grange Hill (Series 8) - the first appearance of Gonch Gardner (who I looked a bit like, apparently!). The acting is bloody awful, but I'm enjoying it.![]()
It is abysmal and it made me want to hit the cast members with a double bass.
Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
I skip the bits showing Zammo's decent into heroin addiction and criminality, as I remembered those bits from the first time around. Also, I asked my family about my apparent resemblance to Gonch Gardner, when I were a lad, and they can't see it.
Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
Danny Kendall is a prickly annoyang dick.
Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
Wasn’t everyone in Grange Hill a pretty annoying dick

Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
I think I may have mentioned this before, but I have very fond memories of a Grange Hill storyline from around 1991 / 92 (right at the tail end of it being a show people would bother watching).
It was all about some of the students trying to save some foxes from having their little home destroyed by some bastard developer. The pupils of Grange Hill succeed over the bastard, and then the storyline is concluded with them looking from afar at this adorable little lot of baby foxes with their mother... the latter of which had clearly been filmed in 1972, on scratchy 16mm. And the students were clearly from present times (i.e. 1991 or whenever this was), on pin-sharp DigiBeta, with early 1990s hair.
The following morning at my school, everyone was laughing about it. It was effectively the "This room is surrounded by film" bit from Monty Python, but it had been attempted as if nobody would notice, when even in the early 70s people noticed it

I heartily approve of the above post!
That is all!

Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
excellent
Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
The series 11 new titles and theme remix are an abomination against all that is holy, pure, and possibly nature, too.
Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
Who would win in a fight between Gripper Stebson and Mauler McCaul, and how would Stebson dispose of the body?
Series 11 is not very good (I'm about halfway through it).

Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
Oh God, the hip hop duo Fresh and Fly...
Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
There is something pleasingly Stalinist about how characters ("Hollo" - Gonch's mate, for example) disappear and are never mentioned again.
Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
excellent. maybe they get sent off to borstal
Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
Grange Hill crossed with Scum!
Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
I'm not surprised Gonch has got an Amstrad PCW.
He looks the type!
He looks the type!
Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
And yellow face / pursued by a fat-lass "humour", was a bit of a surprise (series 11).
Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
With no Gonch / Helen / Ziggy / Vince / Fiona in series 13, my Grange Hill viewing curse has been lifted! Phew!
Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
how many series of grange hill were there anyway?
Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
there were 31 series of grange hill, apparently
Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
i demand that homfrus watch them all

it is the most abjectly early 90s tv thing of all time, somehow
Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
i love how dismal bbc things looked then. like the way sylvester mccoy era doctor who makes you feel weirdly queasy just looking at it
Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
i presume it was to do with whatever shit video cameras they used then. or maybe the 90s just had an aura of cheap charmless crapness that permeated all things
Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
Also...
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
Re: Absurd old TV / movie things
Thinking 'bout how my Grange Hill viewing mania ended within 20 minutes, got me thinking...
What's the quickest you've ever fallen out of love/mania with a tv show?
I loved the first six series of Red Dwarf, then I got through about half the episodes of series 7, and thought... naaaaaaaaaaahhh, not for me, anymore.
