I'm surprised at the Dutch walloping Graham Potter's Sweden (tm). And looking forward to Germany vs Côte d'Ivoire (unknown team x).

Messi - Nancy Kerrigan
Iron bar wielding Ronaldo - Tonya Harding

Post by **dng** » Tue Jun 23, 2026 5:14 pm

I don't know if Messi quite works as Federer for analogy purposes, but Ronaldo is definitely the Djokovic of football

Post by **endar** » Tue Jun 23, 2026 6:18 pm

Naymar is Nadal

Roanlado is back. Never in doubt.

Post by **blombluss** » Tue Jun 23, 2026 7:11 pm

Messi is Joseph Swan
Ronaldo is Thomas Edison who electrocuted an elephant because the elephant had previously substituted Edison when he was on a hat-trick

HUrrah!

We were deeply mediocre for large chunks of that match, and I bet Barcelona are checking the T&Cs on Gordon's contract.

Also, I think the ref was very kind to us on at least two occasions.

Post by **vom** » Wed Jun 24, 2026 2:41 pm

Gordon does a lot of "headless chicken" style running around. He did manage a couple of really nice passes later on but I remain unconvinced.

Post by **Pual** » Wed Jun 24, 2026 5:23 pm

I watched the football yesterday so that’s why it was crap.

Sorry.

This might have already been mentioned, but has anyone here talked about that baffling giant Messi statue yet?

Post by **dng** » Wed Jun 24, 2026 7:45 pm

I can't remember. It was amazing though. I hope India re-erect it on the moon or something

Post by **dng** » Wed Jun 24, 2026 7:46 pm

oh wait, i hadn't seen that there's a new even bigger pointless messi statue now

https://www.espn.co.uk/football/story/_ ... -sculpture

Post by **dng** » Wed Jun 24, 2026 7:47 pm

i hope each country in the world slowly builds bigger and bigger messi statues until we're all dead and they're all that's left of human civilisation

CandyDarling · Post by **CandyDarling** » Wed Jun 24, 2026 8:25 pm

Yes, that new one. But I was mentioning it in part due to... a part

https://www.ibtimes.co.uk/lionel-messi- ... sy-1804752

However, as footage of the statue spread across social media, the focus shifted rapidly from the sculptor's ambition to one specific, awkward design detail: the replica World Cup trophy is positioned directly between the figure's legs. prompting a flood of jokes that quickly overshadowed the tribute itself.

Post by **dng** » Wed Jun 24, 2026 8:46 pm

Scotland anger me - what is point of taking part if those are the performances you're going to serve up? :'(

Post by **vom** » Thu Jun 25, 2026 9:23 pm

I was hoping for a plucky underdog performance, it was frustrating that they lost mostly due to their own incompetence rather than Brazil having to break any kind of sweat

Post by **dng** » Thu Jun 25, 2026 10:19 pm

Germany purposely losing this match because they were too frightened to play scotland in the next round
