Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
I saw two fillums recently. The first was Teenage Sex And Death At Camp Miasma, which some people have given mixed opinions over but I absolutely fucking loved it, to the point where I realised the director had gone through some of the same sexual/gender problems as I have. Which perhaps isn't surprising as the director is trans, and appears to be the only trans woman who is allowed to make films at the moment (at least for major studios). Also I have heard of at least one individual reporting that they had a lesbian awakening thanks to this movie
And then last night I saw BIG SHARK by Tommy Wiseau, which was being shown concurrently with a showing of The Room at the Prince Charles Cinema, and it was prefaced with a Q+A with the very odd man himself. I've been to a number of Q+As by this point and this was definitely the strangest and the most low-key chaotic. And then the film started and his character was behaving the exact same way as he had just been, which I should have guessed would happen beforehand, but was still funny to see

Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
I got to see Sex and Death Etc at a proper indie theater in the city and also loved it, also probably because trans and it hit at a lot of the sex and gender issues i had in maintaining this constant overwound, clinical, self-conscious distance from myself and an unshakeable sense that I eas doing something Wrong and if I could just Do Better rather than admitting what i was to myself.
And also because my wife made me watch the queer trashy low-budget cult horror film Sleepaway Camp the night before and the movie is very obviously inspired by it in the meta sense--not the in-film universe itself per se, but as a piece of pop cultural intellectual property.
The trailer is a masterclass in deceptive editing making it seem like a psychological horror-thriller when it's absolutely not; you could probably argue that it's more of a romantic comedy with horror elements if you want to get pretentious (i do). But the movie is so recursive in being both self- and externally referential that i can't tell if it was misleading because someone insisted that it needed to reach a wider audience, or misleading as part of the whole bit.

but also the best thing was that i was the only person in the entire cinema, which made me feel a bit like i was some sort of reclusive billionaire with my own personal cinema in an underground bunker somewhere

I also loved Teenage Sex & Death at Camp Miasma, probably my favourite of the year so far

Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
I watched Jason and the Argonuats yesterday, because it is the best. I think the five best best things in Jason and the Argonauts probably are:
1. Skeletons
2. Talos
3. Harpies
4. Hydra
5. Jason's amazing dubbed voice

Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
6. Zeus saying "I'm sure this is not the last we have heard of this man Jason THE END" and then there never being any mention of Jason ever again, throughout all of recorded history (or at least in film)
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
I remember its super-quick ending, which reminds me of the time-pressed stories I used to write at school.
No matter what the topic, characters, or time period, ALL of my stories would conclude with:
------------
Then Zeus appeared from nowhere, and announced: "I'm sure this is not the last we have heard of this man Jason."
THE END

Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
I've been watching the foot-o-ball comedy drama Ted Lasso (Series 4).
It's the first time I've ever watched Ted Lasso.
I'm quite enjoying it, but how the Dickens this thing has won 13 Emmys is utterly baffling to me. It's like a kids show, but with adult swears.

Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
Standards have dropped to staggering lows
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
Is Chris Powell still in it?
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
Lovely Chris Powell
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
We watched it a few years ago with my older son and Talos the giant statue was briefly a very important character in our lives. Also it coincided with a Ray Harryhausen exhibition at the modern art gallery where you could look at a bunch of models and also pretend you were fighting skellingtons and things via some shonky green screen set up, which was nice.dng wrote: Mon Sep 07, 2026 11:51 am I watched Jason and the Argonuats yesterday, because it is the best. In summary, yes it's the best.
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
I watched the first series of Ted Lasso and thought it was fine, then never watched or thought about it ever again.
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
The football mans?!? If so, he wasnae in series 4 thus far, although there is one episode to go, so I will report back, then!
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
That bad, eh? Jeez!
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
Whenever I watch something on Apple TV it always tries to start up Ted Lasso immediately the programme I’m watching finishes.
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
I assume this is the only reason anybody has ever watched it.
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
Apple TV used to claim id watched an episode of it when i hadn't and never had nor will
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
Not even to see what chris powell's doing in it
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
I thought the first season was absolutely lovely
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)

Just watched the final ep of Ted Lesson - enjoyable, but just leave it be, now, plz.
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
Digger: I thought this was good, I don’t really know what everyone is complaining about.
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
For some reason the internet has decided to tell me the entire plot of this, even though i have never made any attempt to know anything about it at all
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
So theres not really any point in seeing it now
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
I think it’s still worth watching, although that’s a shame. There’s not really that much to spoil after the first 30 minutes or so.
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
Although I did feel like the internet was definitely going to spoil it for me which is part of the reason I went to see it sooner rather than later.
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
I also watched The Sure Thing, which was quite a sweet film about teenage John Cusack trying to have sex.

Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
I am not going to see Digger because
1) Tom Fucking Cruise is in it, a man who is genuinely evil
2) The meta twists sound stupid
3) The sudden hysterical astroturfed PR campaign involving every fucker in Hollywood calling me a cunt for not wasting my money on it is further putting me off
Instead over the weekend I watched a good film from 1981 (Possession, 4K remaster)
The next thing I'm going to see will be THIS

Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
I've presumably said this before, but when my mum and dad went to see the devils when it came out, my mum got so freaked out by the nuns being tortured she started screaming uncontrollably and then passed out, and my dad had to carry her out of the cinema like she was a corpse
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
also in those days local authorities could just outright ban films if they didn't like them, so the only place you could watch the devils in the whole of essex was in basildon

This new restored cut has the following scene put back in, which wasn't in the original and was thought to have been destroyed for years

W-ton council banned A View to a Kill because they thought Walken's laug/smile was too scary for Black Country minds to cope with.dng wrote: Sun Oct 11, 2026 11:30 am also in those days local authorities could just outright ban films if they didn't like them, so the only place you could watch the devils in the whole of essex was in basildon

Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
my grandad took me and my brother to watch a view to a kill at the cinema for some reason, when i was 7 i suppose. anyway, my grandad said he couldn't understand any of it at all, and we couldn't understand how he couldn't understand any of it all.
then 30 years later i saw it and realised exactly why he couldn't understand any of it at all. it was because it was shite
