Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
Re: Motion Pictures (that amuse me)
There's a new Kelly Reichardt film (first cow) that's out now on that Mubi film service thing so I got that for a month and watched it and it was really good hooray. It reminded me a bit of Old Joy, but as a western. Which was nice
Re: Motion Pictures (that amuse me)
Then I watched a Nils Frahm concert they've got on there (very good), and a short Agnes Varda film abou women (good), and then Meshes Of The Afternoon, a ten minute black andwhite silent surreallist film from the 40s that is genuinely one of the best things I've ever seen
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meshes_of_the_Afternoon
it was wonderful in just about every way (including the music, which from that wikipedia article I just learnt was only added 20 years later)

Re: Motion Pictures (that amuse me)
Mubi is great. I might treat myself to a month to watch First Cow also
Re: Motion Pictures (that amuse me)
I think Meshes of the Afternoon is one of the only things I've immediately put on again a second time after it finished
Re: Motion Pictures (that amuse me)
Yes, it's great. Also the mubi app on our new TV is a hundred times better than the old one on the PS4, in that a: the sound is in sync, and b: it actually lets you watch all the films on there instead of only a few, because it has a search function instead of not having a search function at all
Re: Motion Pictures (that amuse me)
I was going to do that but i came up here to n3ta insteadvom wrote: Tue Jul 13, 2021 6:16 pm I think Meshes of the Afternoon is one of the only things I've immediately put on again a second time after it finished

The robons look like Frank Sidebottom's straight-laced cousins.

Also yes Disney Plus is piss. I don't see the point in it unless they get Fox films on there, and even then I don't think I want to give Disney regular doses of money due to reasons

Re: Motion Pictures (that amuse me)
I subbed to Disney+ to watch Mandalorian and since then I've not found much to watch for myself. But it's pretty good for my son who is 6.
One of his favourites is Atlantis: The Lost Empire, which is quite charming and has an excellent final sequence.

Supposedly if you sign up for a free one-month trial of "scribd", you can get a free one-year mubi subscription, which you get to keep even after you've cancelled scribd. I already had a mubi subscription when I found this out so I don't know if it works.

High Heels and Low Lifes
British heist comedy with many people. Directed by lovely Mel Smith.
Hell Ride
Grindhouse Western with bikes instead of horses. Very odd dialogue. Madson, carradine, hopper, vinnie Jones. Very odd.

Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
I took my son to watch the new Space Jam film. I fell asleep about half way through because I'm a middle-aged parent, but also because it is so bland. So safe. He enjoyed it in the moment but hasn't mentioned it since, unlike with most films we see. It does the job, but is seriously lacking in creativity. The plot is so half-arsed. It could have been made any time in the last 40 years. It's like Tron with cartoons. I still don't understand the baddy's motive other than he's a computer program that wants to, er, annoy people. Or something. Maybe I should have stayed awake.

Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
I have a new baby, which means I get to go to the cinema with my baby for the next few weeks whilst I'm on paternity leave. Last week's baby cinema film was Nowhere Special, which is about a 34-year-old single dad with a terminal illness making preparations for where his young son will live once he (the dad) dies. I couldn't properly judge if it was a good film or not because the concept just made me cry solidly for the hour and a half we were watching it.

Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
I saw a spooky play at the theatre called 2:22. Not a film, but we probably don't need a theatre thread. It was good. Made me jump quite a few times. Lily Allen, and the other actors were exce.

That sounds rather interesting, that. Nice one, Sir!
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
I do like that - even Italian prog has to contain a touch of Italo-disco... IT'S THE LAW THERE!!!!
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
the green knight - sir gawain is the sexiest stupidest knight. so sexy. so stupid
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
also according to this gawaine is said garwin. i hope that's not really how you say it because it sounds even stupider than however i thought you said it
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
Is that good? I hated Pete's Dragon so powerfully that it would take a lot to get me to give David Lowery a second chance
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
its... okay. dev patel's wonderful, and it looks nice. i can't really complain properly about what i disliked without spoiling it, so i won't, but yeah its pretty good (i like king arthur nonsense so that helps, and there's lots of scenes with beautiful swirling smoke and lovely yellow woodlands and so on)
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
i love petes dragon (the 70s/80s version). i do not undertsand why there is a new one
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
i want to write a king arthur novel about guinevere asking king arthur why exactly he's always agreeing to have her burnt at the stake whenever any of his knights demand she gets burnt at the stake

can't stand Sean Harris. And for that reason, I'm out.
Cthulu bum you!
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
He's only in it for about five minutes. All he says is Garwin, over and over again. I will never forgive him
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
I bet Tolkien didn't pronounce it Garwin
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
Also I quite like him I think. He was good in possum (the matthew holness film from a few years back). I have no idea what else he was in
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
Prometheus
Re: Motion Pictures (that anuse me)
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say he wasn't good in that (I can't even remember who he was in that)
