Shenmue II is basically the last third of Shenmue I, but for twenty hours

Yes. I'd never got anywhere with this before. All i remembered of it really was getting trapped playing pachinko for seventy hours in hong kong, but this time i got past that by selling off all my virtua fighter figurines from the first game and then trying to never ever spend any money whatsoever

technically shenmue 2 is probably a better game than shenmue 1 (it's bigger, more varied, there's more to do, etc) but it's loads less actually good in every way that matters (charm, atmosphere, the feeling of being in an actual place rather than a videogame place)

I loved shenmue 2. I felt like I was lost in a huge foreign city and it was very exciting.

I don't know if it's because I'm old or because of modern tv lag, but the quick time events in shenmue 2 are bloody impossible

Also I've got to a bit now where you have to do about a hundred street fights in a row against people called things like Rod Stunt and I keep losing those too, over and over again, while sighing, occasionally swearing

I could do the fights In the first one for some reason. Possibly because you never seemed to need the dodge button

Shenmue 3 has added a mechanic whereby your health is constantly depleting and you have to buy/eat food constantly and it's fucking terrible

It's realistic! says the internet, even though I'm pretty sure eating nothing but cloves of garlic constantly would actually help prevent starvation let alone helping me recover after getting beaten up by various martial artists , but then again I'm not a medical professional so what do I know

I've got like three bulbs of garlic in the pantry and wish to punch every man I see, so this is welcome news.

Oh no now I'm looking forward to it even less.

I seem to remember hating the end of Shenmue II, because you have to walk behind someone for what seems like hours. This may have seemed worse because I was playing it at 2am though.

Even though I knew that would be the case, and you've now confirmed it, I will still continue my long trudge towards playing and completing Shenmue III.

I think this would be a good case to study if you wanted to examine the particular mental illness of people that have spent their lives playing games.
